Radhakrishna Chatergoon
As has been reported earlier this week on CCN TV 6, cases pertaining to setting one’s own vehicle on fire, with a hope to get insurance payout are increasing every day. Recently insurance giant revealed that they have recently arrested a San Fernando resident staging a drama of theft and burning the vehicle – a Honda CRV in an effort to cash in on an insurance claim. The Insurance giant then announced if you commit fraud to gain, we are here to catch you. Both culprits, charged with insurance fraud – Radhakrishna Chatergoon; & his son, Avinash Chatergoon; surrendered at the San Fernando Police Station. An amount of $60,000 has been set for bail of each person.
These costs end up rolling over to the honest paying insure-es such as high value homeowners insurance as well as all aspects of new policies going forward. These arrests were made possible when an anonymous caller alerted the detectives that two of Chatergoon’s friends were involved who assisted PC Mohammed in this drama of theft and arson. The investigators were able to get confession from Avinash Chatergoon, who revealed that his father was responsible in this conspiracy to have his vehicle set on fire to gain refund from insurance company and pin the blame on his daughter ex-boyfriend. The main accused was having domestic problems with his car when Radhakrishna informed why not get rid of it and suggested to bum the vehicle and get the claim.
`Vehicle on Fire'
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
On Wednesday 29th September 2010, I went to bed circa 11.00pm, my wife ( Seeta Chatergoon ) said that she went to bed at 11.30pm and my sister—in-law ( Surijdai Bajnathsingh ) at 12.30am on Thursday 30th September, 2010.
On Thursday 30th September 2010 circa 1.30am, I and my wife were awakened by my neighbour ( Allan Orie ) who shouted that the vehicle downstairs was on fire. Mrs. Sodra Orie had called for the Fire Dept. which arrived circa 2.00am.
My wife and myself got up and headed for downstairs. My wife woke up the children and her sister. I put on the lights for Downstairs, picked up the keys for the vehicles (5 off).
When I reached downstairs, I saw that the CRV ( PCM 860) bonnet was on fire ( apparently some clothes that were left there during a clothes washing exercise. I used the water hose and started extinguishing the fire. Allan and his son ( Andy) ran a water hose from his property and started extinguishing the fire also. The fire then went to the dashboard area. I opened the CRV right front door and tried to open the bonnet but experienced difficulty in doing so. This hindered the outing of the fire. The Fire Dept was called in circa 1.30am and they arrived circa 2.00am. The lock was cut to enable the Bonnet to open, at which time the fire was put out circa 2.15 am. On closer examination, it was observed that the CRV was also bomb sprayed red. An estimate to repair/ bring this vehicle back to its previous condition is circa $180,000.00.
The B11 Sunny PAL9834 Front and Right sides were also bomb sprayed in red. Estimate to repair is circa $:5,000.00.
The underside of the house flooring is heavily coated with black soot from the smoke and the flooring was hot.
The Fire Dept had called the Police and the Police arrived at circa 2.43 am. Two persons came and took notes. They left circa 3.00 am.
The fire Dept left circa 2.58 am.
8.00 am Mr. Ramdass visited the site and. said that he will check us again.
10.00 am 3 CID personnel came and took pictures. When asked IF anyone would be taking finger prints, they said no.
Friday 1st October 2010, no one came.
